Faith at Full Speed: How Speedway Racing Ministries is Taking Church to the Track
For thousands of racing fans, drivers, and pit crews, Sundays mean race day—not a morning in the pews. But what if church could happen right where they are—at the speedway, in the stands, and on the track? That’s exactly what Speedway Racing Ministries (SRM) is doing.
This Fresh Expression of church brings the gospel to the heart of the motorsports world, offering race-day devotionals, pit-side chaplaincy, and community that goes beyond the track. SRM isn’t just an outreach—it’s a fully formed faith community, living out the gospel in the racing culture.
This isn’t a side project. It’s a movement. And it’s a model for what’s possible when we take church beyond the building.

Born from a Need: How SRM Started
The idea for Speedway Racing Ministries emerged when a few race-loving believers saw a gap between faith and the racing world. Fans and crews were devoted to their sport, but many had no faith community that fit their lifestyle.
One of the ministry’s founders recalls, “We realized that people weren’t avoiding church because they didn’t care about faith; they just didn’t feel like they had a place where faith and their passion for racing could intersect.”
This realization turned into action:
- Pre-race prayer gatherings
- Trackside devotionals for fans and crews
- Chaplains embedded in the racing culture, offering support beyond the track
- Baptisms and life-changing spiritual conversations in unexpected places
Over time, these moments became more than events—they became church.
“I came for the race, but I left with something bigger—a feeling of belonging I didn’t know I needed.” – Race Fan
Why This Matters: Meeting People Where They Are
The racing world moves fast—physically and emotionally. Constant travel, high-pressure jobs, and intense competition leave many in search of deeper purpose. Traditional churches often struggle to reach this community, not because they lack faith, but because they lack a church expression that fits their world.
SRM changes that by embodying a core Fresh Expressions principle:
“Church can happen anywhere.”
This isn’t about getting people into a church building—it’s about bringing church to them. Whether it’s in the pits, at a tailgate, or between practice runs, SRM offers a space for faith in the places people already call home.

Lives Transformed: Stories from the Track
The impact of Speedway Racing Ministries isn’t just theoretical—it’s deeply personal and profoundly life-changing. For many, the speedway has become a place of transformation, where faith and racing collide in ways they never expected.
One driver, who had spent years focused solely on winning, found himself drawn to SRM’s pre-race devotionals. He admitted that he had been running from God just as fiercely as he pushed his car to its limits. But through the ministry’s presence at the track, something shifted. He began to see his identity as more than just a competitor. Eventually, in an emotional moment surrounded by fellow drivers and crew, he chose to be baptized—right there at the speedway.
A pit crew member shared how the constant pressure of racing had left him burned out and exhausted. He was always chasing the next race, the next win, the next challenge, never slowing down long enough to consider his deeper purpose. But SRM’s presence in the racing world gave him a space to pause, reflect, and reconnect with God. “These moments before a race—when we stop, pray, and connect—help me stay grounded,” he shared. “I don’t just feel like a worker in the pits; I feel like I have a purpose beyond this job.”
Even fans, who might never have considered themselves “church people,” have found a sense of belonging through SRM. One longtime racing enthusiast described how faith had always felt distant—something meant for other people, in other places. But at the track, in the middle of what he loved, he encountered a different kind of church—one that spoke his language. “I came for the race, but I left with something bigger—a feeling of belonging I didn’t know I needed.”
These stories aren’t rare exceptions; they are part of the growing reality that when the gospel meets people where they are, lives change. Speedway Racing Ministries isn’t just creating moments of inspiration—it’s building a lasting community of faith, right at the heart of the racing world.
A Model for Any Church: The Fresh Expressions Journey
Speedway Racing Ministries isn’t just a unique outreach—it’s a model for how any church can reimagine its mission. Following the Fresh Expressions Journey, SRM started by listening—noticing the deep community among race fans and recognizing their need for a faith space that met them where they were. Instead of expecting people to come to church, they brought church to them.
From there, they began loving and serving, offering prayers, chaplaincy, and support in the high-pressure world of racing. Over time, these relationships grew into a true faith community, where trust was built, spiritual conversations flourished, and lives were transformed. Today, many are taking steps toward deeper discipleship, through baptism, Bible study, and prayer, all within the racing culture they love.

What’s Your Speedway?
Speedway Racing Ministries is proof that church can happen in the most unexpected places.
Now, the question is: where does your church need to go?
- Where are the people in your community already gathering?
- What passions, hobbies, or spaces could become places of faith?
- Who needs to know that church is for them, even if they’ve never stepped inside a sanctuary?
The Fresh Expressions movement reminds us that God is already at work in the world—we just need to join Him.
